Yoga is a Sanskrit word that means “to yoke” or “to unite”.  It is a wonderful practice to unite the body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

Yoga is a powerful tool for self-transformation and a valuable way to achieve strength, flexibility, clarity, concentration, and increased confidence.  It helps to quieten the mental fluctuations of the mind and soothes the nervous system.  This is calming and restorative.  Students often say they sleep much better which is important for our overall health.

Wear something comfortable so that you can move freely.  We work with bare feet in order to prevent slipping on the mat. You may want to have a light blanket for relaxation.

The general rule is 4 hours after a substantial meal and 2 hours after a snack.  A class consists of some twists and inverted poses, therefore it is more comfortable and you will have more energy.

The simple answer is No.  Actually, it is not good when the body is too flexible.  With time we aim gradually build up a combination of strength and flexibility.

Some women may choose to have a rest during this time.  However, you can continue with your yoga practice while eliminating certain postures.  It is advisable to avoid all inverted positions (headstand, shoulder stand, legs up the wall), twists, strong abdominal work, and the boat postures.

Yoga does not conflict with religion.  Yoga is a mind and body practice that typically combines postures and breathing exercises.  Some classes will include mindfulness and meditation.  All sessions will end with a period of relaxation.
